Lewton McConnell
Lewton was born in 1855 and raised in the outskirts of Wichita, Kansas. He was born to an American father and German mother. His father’s name was Jedediah. His mother, Grazia. When he was born he was the youngest out of three sisters and an older brother. Josephine was the oldest sister and twelve at the time, he could remember her being simple and modest much like his mother. The second sister was eleven, Gretchen (and much to his dismay was a red-headed temperamental bully). His brother’s name was Chester and was nearly six years older than him. Ezekiel, was three years older than him. The second youngest sister (whom was two at the time) name was Meta. He grew up on a small farm. As he grew he could distinctly remember his family’s farm suffering. It was a terrible chunk of land to grow any sort of crops. It was long after he was born (three years) that his mother gave birth to another little girl, Laurabelle. It was this sister as well as his brothers, who were closest.
When he was six he had already began helping his father as much as possible attend duties of the farm. Ever since his youth he had deep loathing thinking about the long torrid hours. However, he became strong even very young. Soon after he started his work upon the farm his oldest sister was married off to an older preacher in Dodge City. He later realized it was his parent’s intention to marry the older daughters off quickly so that they could bring more food to the table. It wasn’t three months later that Gretchen had found a New York journalist to marry her. She had enough charm and beauty to lure any “comfortable” man to marry her. Unlike Josephine, who was not considered very pretty or smart by his parents. Although, he could remember being a very hard worker.
When he turned eight years his mother bore a daughter. A girl Asa. Much to his father’s dismay that summer the money was low. It had seemed his mother was very weak from the birth of the girl, and possibly lack of malnutrition. A year later his mother became feeble with a common fever, and passed away. It was the first tragedy it seemed his family had to endure. His father took it harshly, and took up heavy drinking and gambling in the evenings. Meta at eleven began intensely caring for the twins and doing housework. With little help from six year old Laurabelle. It called for Chester, Ezekiel, and Lewton to work even longer and more strenuous hours at the farm. Their father remained a drunk for a couple more years.
Chester left home when he turned seventeen, to find work in the Gold industry. He had grown so resentful of his father that the fights became more excessive. Lewton could remember the farm work almost unbarring, with his father’s laziness. Meta spent most of her time almost as a second mother.
In late spring night when Lewton was twelve years old, Kiowa natives unexpectedly attacked their small farm. Killing their father. Taking the rest of them captive, and burning their home down. It was hard on them to accept the drastic change from their secure life to a very different one. The Kiowa’s were forceful in their teachings to the children, and constantly tried to pry them apart. The Asa was given to a husband and wife whose only child died. Meta was given to a Kiowa warrior as a wife. Laurabelle, was given to a family with two children and from what he could remember was treated cruelly by the other children. At twelve, no family wanted him. So he worked amongst the fields once again with his brother Ezekiel. After a year he found his life with the Kiowa’s just the same as his last one, even after he began developing friendships. He realized the twins were picking up on dialects of the natives without any knowledge of their English language. Laurabelle was unhappy living with the beatings of the other children. However, Meta seemed to be the only happy one. Seemingly falling in love with her “husband” the Kiowa Warrior.
He plotted for some time with Ezekiel to steal the Asa away and take Laurabelle with him as well. Meta was convinced she had no culture with the whites. He discussed no further plans with anybody but Laurabelle and Ezekiel. When they had found the opportunity to escape a half of a year later they took it. Bringing a small supply of food with them and stealing two Kiowa horses. It had been a risky predicament but the children made their way across the vast plains. A stranger on their long journey had found the children and taken them in. They helped the children regain a life on their farm. However, it seemed this farm was much more prosperous than that of his fathers. This time the middle aged couple had no children.
It took a couple years for Lewton and Ezekiel to get a hold of his brother. He sent out many letters, telegrams of addresses he found. He had never gotten a response. By this time at the age of fifteen, Lewton was becoming increasingly more wild. He found a interest in going to town and sneaking into Saloons and drinking in the nearby small city of Wichita. He kept this very well hidden from his foster parents (whom were overjoyed in taking in the children).
It had been two years until Chester made his way to the farm on the outskirts of Wichita. By this time 17 year old Lewt and 19 year old Ezekiel was increasingly becoming more of a burden for his foster parents. It was a reuniting, that whisked the small remainder of the family away to Texas. His brother was a man of wealth and power. Within such a short amount of time his brother explained to him that he had found much gold over in California. He had bought a large extravagant cattle ranch out in the depths of desert-land. He even had a beautiful wife. It didn’t occur to Lewton until shortly later that his brother was on the bad side of the law as well. His “crew” (or posse) over took many trains. Despite Chester’s wealth he loved it for the thrill. Ezekiel soon joined his brother in his gain for wealth
It was a good life for Asa, Ezekiel, Laurabelle, and Lewton at the property. Chester had many people working for him to handle the cattle he rarely had to help. Lewton amused himself in women, drinking, and began helping his brother with his posse business. It wasn’t long his brother became an unknown outlaw. Starting out small and slowly working his way up. It hadn’t been until his twentieth birthday Lewt started out on his own being an outlaw.[/font]
