"I will stay with you, si," she murmured in his ear, her body pressed to his. "I will be yours and only yours, I will take care of you gladly, Tom Harte and be yours." For the first time in her life, she knew that she had something good and that it was something right for her...for them.
Hugging him tightly, she kissed him, tears in her eyes. "I love you, mi amore, now and always."

His heart filled with love as he kissed her back. In one motion he lifted her high above and held her up and spun as he laughed.
"SHE LOVES ME!" he shouted out with joy then carefully set her back on her feet. "You will never regret marrying me," he spoke as he looked at her.

Laughing, Esperanza looked down at him as he lifted her up, then hugged him tightly. "I love you, Amore, truly, I do." She kissed his cheek, then sighed and rested her head against his chest. "I think Doc will be disappointed. I do like him, but he is a friend. You..." Her grin widened. "I want to be with you, only you, like as a simple rancher's wife...it is enough for me."

He smiled, his heart filling with love hearing her say those things.
"Doc is a friend and he will be fine. It's not him I'm worried about. It's Duke," he cupped her chin with his hand and looked into her eyes.
"I know you're going to need your things but you shouldn't confront Duke alone. He's not a man to be trifled with but, we're going to have to face him eventually. Either in town or here on the ranch. But I won't let you face him alone. I'll risk life and limb to protect you. Just let me know when you want face him and I'll bring every able bodied man with me to make sure he can't hurt you."

"It is all right, I will be fine," she assured him, still not convinced that Duke would really make such a fuss over losing her. After all, he had a lot of other girls, and she'd never said anything about staying forever.

He held her securely in his arms as she talked but then her last words came biting back at him and he pulled away.
"Esperanza, I don't want you to marry me just because you think it's what I want you to do," he looked at her. "Marriage is between two people who work together to make a life for themselves. Not a master/slave affair. If all you see is you doing what I say then we'd both be better off staying as we are and I could come visit you at the brothel anytime I get the urge. If you think that's what this is about you'd be better off staying with Duke or leaving with Doc," he looked at her sternly.

"I want to marry you because I want to marry you," she insisted, cuddling against him. "I am just saying that fate led me to your barn...to you. I have been with many men, Tom, some of them have offered to marry me, but until you...I could not imagine giving up my freedom, of settling down and being a wife..." The last word was spoken with derision. "But with you, Tom, I want to stay, to be your friend and lover, to take care of you and never stray again."

Smiling, he pulled her closer and hugged her tightly. "That's what I want, too," he told her. "I will kill anyone who tries to hurt you. You are my woman and no one elses. My woman, my love, my life.".

Esperanza pressed against him, holding him tightly. "We won't let it come to that," she murmured with a smile, "for I do not want anything to happen to you, either. I do not want to live without you."
Sighing, she kissed him. "When will we get married? I do not care about anything fancy. I just want to be yours."
