John Holliday stepped into the Blackbird Saloon and Casino on a sunny afternoon. He was dressed in one of his finest suits. A diamond stud shone on his broad tie. Around his waist and across his shoulder he wore two concealed Colt single action pistols. On his head he sported a black hat.
He was impressed with the place. It was decorated in one of his favorite colors - scarlet. Few people were there this time of day so he strolled to the bar and asked for and paid for a whiskey.
"Kinda quiet right now. What time does the place liven up?" he asked the bartender.
"Regular crowd usually comes in around 7 o'clock tonight. We got a show tonight, if you're interested. Here's a flyer we had made up for the customers," he handed John one.
Picking it he read it.
For Your Entertainment

- A Visit from the St, Louis Songbird Lilly Tippins
- A Short Play "Faust Sells His Soul" by the Edelman Troupe
- Chorus Dancers dancing the latest dances from Paris
Tonight at Eight O'Clock
"Sounds entertaining," he remarked finishing the drink and ordering another. "Do you by any chance have a faro table?" he asked. "Poker's my game of choice but I do enjoy a good play at the faro table."
"Yes sir."
"Excellent, I shall try my hand at it. Thank you, sir," he nodded to the bartender and moved into the casino area. Tables were set up ready for poker players. There was a roulette wheel and two faro tables.

Shawn entered the saloon wearing a black top hat, long coat, black tie, and black trousers. He was not a drinker but this was a place to be acquainted with the locals. Every patron stopped, turned to see the new comer and sized him up. He nodded his head and gave a small smile. They all quickly noted a new comer and gone back doing their drinking, gambling, schmoozing and whatever they are doing.
Being new, Shawn knew the bar would be an exceptional start-off for information on the city, but he was not planning to purchase a drink yet. He had to stay and appear professional and dignified for the reason of his occupation. To appear drunk would be very bad for his business.
Shawn crossed over to the Casino area. Shawn tripped over a foot and fell forward catching himself on a post and possible someone He nearly missed someone too. “Sorry, I tripped,” replied Shawn. with a hint of Kentucky accent.

Duke look at the man immaculately dressed and gave him a wide grin. "My fault, sir," he stood up. He had been leaning against a table talking with a couple of patrons. "I am the proprietor of this establishment. Call me Duke," he reached out a hand to shake the gentleman's hand. "You're new to our fair city. Glad to have you here. You're a Southerner? I am not from the South, myself. Chicago was my home. Would you care for a drink? On the house for new comers."

“Mr. Duke, I am Shawn Flanagan. I am the new undertaker for Del Fuego,” he boldly replied. Which some people looked and gone silent for a second.
He placed his right calloused hand in the Duke's hand. He had a firm grasp and gave a good solid handshake. “And yes, I am a southerner. And you got a good ear. Just arrived from Ashland, Kentucky.” He openly confessed. Duke was being polite. Judging another was not right. Especially in his business as a undertaker. Who knows Duke could be six feet under to-morrow.
" Mr Duke. Do you have California Syrah red wine?” he asked. "I am hoping I am not asking too much."
Mean while the server was getting his drink. Shawn was calm. "Well you know my business, Will there be a surcharge for getting information on who is who and who does what?" he asked coolly looking in Duke's dark eyes. The undertaker was not afraid but he was taking the Duke as another equal.

Duke liked this man. He was also a businessman like him, although of a different sort. Duke made his fortune from people who were looking for a good time, whether that good time was spent at the bottom of a whiskey bottle, seeking their fortune at the poker tables or upstairs with one of his "girls". This man made his fortune at the end of their lives, a task he himself could not hope to accomplish as not everyone indulged in the vices he offered.
"Well you know my business, Will there be a surcharge for getting information on who is who and who does what?"
Offering him a seat at a table and Duke also ordered a drink sat with him. "Just ask away. I'll be happy to tell you anything." About that time from across the room came a coughing sound of someone not well. "That is a Doc," he told him. "Doc Holliday. He's what they call a lunger, but don't call him that. I could introduce you, if you'd like."

The owner was a business man and he knew how to treat his customers with the proper kindness with respect. Shawn sat down as Duke offered him a drink. Did Duke say Holiday? Shawn turned to the back of the man. Holiday could not be the same Holiday he met years ago out near Kentucky.
“No, he look like he's enjoying himself,” Shawn replied truthfully because he would not want to disturb when he had a good hand. “And he could possible have a good hand. I would not want to ruin his moment.”
It took two drinks for Shawn to hear who was who and who did what. “Thank you,” smiled to Duke. “This all will help me,” he had taken notes when Duke was talking. It was all useful too. “The size of the population I might need an assistant. A digger,” he said looking around as he was thinking. “Do you know anyone who is in a need for a job?”

Free now that her most recent customer had finished, Esperanza moved down the stairs, scanning the crowded room below her. She walked slowly, in part to give her time to really check out the men, but also as a way of teasing any who bothered to look at her.
Spotting Duke with a man that she didn't recognize, she decided to find out more about the newcomer. As she slid up to the table, she stopped beside Duke, draping an arm around his shoulders as she looked Shawn over.
"Is there anything I can get you gentlemen?"

It wasn't a month since, Shawn lost his wife. The aching pain was still there, but he noticed the beautiful woman displaying herself to her work place and she was very close to Duke. Her slender arm was around him as he was her master.
This was Duke's establishment and Duke was the top dog gentleman of the BlackBird Saloon. Shawn sat up in his seat, placing a hand on his lap, his other hand holding the stem of his wine glass. She was had a nice neck line, which connected to her bosom which was leading to sinful thoughts. He quickly looked over at his drink because he was in control. He had been in control since he was married but he was widowed not even a month.
If he had caught her eye, he would nod to her to show he was not ignoring her. He was nervous because Duke seemed to be powerful man. Shawn had to respect Duke and his business. Shawn removed his hat because he realized he had it on, but he took it off in a way to show he was respecting her. “Hello, ma'am,” he replied training on her eyes and not her neck line which was hard to resist but he had forced the wisdom from proverbs to avoid such seduction females. It was more easy because he was still recovering his wife but he would had a hard time not stare at her hardware. It was better keep his eyes at eye level with the owner. He waited to see if the Duke would say anything. Shawn just was not planning to step on anyone toes yet.
However, he accident knocked his near empty wine glass over on the table and he leaped up because he got some wine on his lap.

"Essie, darling," he handed her a cloth napkin. "The man has spill wine on his trousers. Give him a hand and help him clean himself up." he saw it as an opportunity for her to seduce the good man. Another way to make money.
He watched to see what would happen next. The undertaker did seem very tense when Esperanza, clad in her skimpy outfit that nearly showed her curves and charms, sat on Duke's lap.

It would be a sin, Esperanza thought, to pass up such an opportunity, and she accepted the napkin, then moved sensually around the table.
"Do not worry, senor," she purred as she neared the man, "there is no harm done." She started to dab softly at the spill, starting mid-thigh and slowly working her way up, assessing his reaction. "If you would like, you can come up to my room and I can wash them out for you?"

The mistress had a Spanish accent. She was over him like a cat wanting attention, dabbing her hand gently down on his lap which his body was responding quickly too. Shawn could tell she knew exactly what and where she was doing and going. She was good. She was like the devil trying to work him away from his virtues.
The image of his wife came to him like a tidal wave. His son image was there too. He loved them so much he was not in going to be entice by one of the devil's female imps.
"Hand off! I do not need your services," he spatted at her. "I came here for information and a drink. I did not come be seduced!" He tried to push her away gently.

"Whoa now there, Digger," Duke spoke up. "My girl wasn't trying to do you any harm. I told her to tend to you. It would be rude for one of my guests to soil his clothing and we not be hospitable and offer to clean him up. There's no need to be rude. Come here, darlin'," Duke called Esperanza to return to his lap. "The man feels uncomfortable with a beautiful woman such as you touching him perhaps we're barking up the wrong tree," he teased her and kissed her cheek, his arms around her trim waist.

Mogawan's attention was immediately drawn to where Duke was sitting and moved across the floor with long, determined strides stopping just as another man approached the table. His hands were fists by his side as he stopped and waited for any sign from Duke to intervene. Whatever happened his first and foremost purpose was to protect Duke at any cost.

"Beg pardon," Doc spoke looking closely at Esperanza as she sat on Duke's lap and then looked at Shawn, his Southern accent filling the air. "I couldn't help but to observe the goings on. In fact I do believe you have brought the attention of one of the a bodyguards. My suggestion, good man," he looked at Shawn, "is to sit down and stop making yourself a target. Whiskey, anyone," he covered his mouth with a handkerchief and cough hard. Pouring some into everyone's glasses he sat down and smiled at Esperanza. "You are looking ravishing tonight, my dear," he took her hand and gently kissed the back of it.

Duke chuckled at Doc. "Shawn, John Holliday. John, Shawn Flanagan," Duke introduced them both and waved at Mogawan indicating all was fine.
"I must warn you, Shawn, Magowan is a particularly ugly character. In fact, he is a brute that will think nothing at all of tearing you a part if he thinks you are hurting me or one of my "girls". I would avoid him at all costs."
