"I do whatever is asked of me," she replied softly. Certainly, he knew what she was? How could he not, especially after the way he'd reacted when she'd first asked him to her room. Continuing to move slowly with him, she smiled, shrugging. "I am a dance partner, a lover, a listener, whatever you need."
Stopping then, she pulled back just a little to give him his freedom, should he choose to leave. Still, she reached up and lightly caressed his cheek. "What do you want me to be, Senor?"

Shawn closed his eyes on her reply. In the Bible, Wisdom warned men to stay away from these women. He was not clear but some where it said if you don't listen to wisdom she would turn away and let you fall in clamor disaster and she won't come to save you. You can call her day and out and wisdom would just laugh at you because a man refused to listen to wisdom's wise words.
Shawn had to stop himself being entice by this beautiful creature. That's what Duke wanted. Duke was a business man. Duke was like the owner of her. There was a price for all this and he had to pay it.
“damn it,” he mumbled under his breath as she moved away. “This is all has a price...” he was disgusted with himself. “Please stop what you are doing, Esperanza please. I should had refused this in the first place. I was trying to put a good impression with your employer and keep the guard off me."
How could he allow himself to fall for this trap. He so wanted to bang his head against the wall right now. “Why do you allow yourself be used, sweetheart? What do you have to gain from Duke?” he wanted to say asshole. "You deserve better life. Someone to marry. A man to care for you and not be his...sex doll." Was this a mistake saying this to her. Yes, it was. He just knew she was living a life that should not be for women. But he knew women had to do what they need to do to survive.

"No...Of course..." Taking a breath, she plastered on her professional smile as she took another step away, stung by the words, but not really startled. He wouldn't be the first to come up here then leave in a panic. "I would not have let them do anything to you," she murmured, "and..." She shrugged, it didn't matter now, but the only price for this sort of time was a drink or two. "I did not mean to trick you."

"I work for myself!" she declared, drawing her shoulders up proudly, "Duke merely provides the room and security, I can leave any time.." She didn't know why she wanted to explain herself, but for some reason, it mattered that he understood. "I do not mind," she added, her tone softening, "I can leave when I wish...I have been many places, not tied in an apron cooking and doing laundry day after day, looking at the same barn." She shrugged. "I am not unhappy, and one day I will have saved enough to not have to work at all." On occasion she would have pangs of longing to have someone who truly loved her, but she was easily able to shove those notions aside in favor of not being tied to a man who beat her or put her down.
"I'm sorry to have offended you, senor." She opened the door, her smile more genuine. "But if you ever want to talk or dance or be hugged, you know where to find me."

“We all have to work, sweetheart. We all dream about not working for a living. The dead are only the privilege to lay around and not work. No worries, no sickness and no pain. Rest are they in peace,” he said softly looking down at the floor.
"I'm sorry to have offended you, senor." She opened the door, her smile more genuine. "But if you ever want to talk or dance or be hugged, you know where to find me."
“No, my dear you have not offended me,” he replied as he leaned against the wall. “I wrong paying you for a service or any other woman to give me something that's not genuine real. Love in time as relationships come in time and are hard to come by. And than those relationships can go away over night. You are beautiful. Duke protects you but you can say you are unhappy but you did not say your happy. Those are two meanings my dear.” he paused looking out of the door to be sure there was nobody listening to this conversation.
Shawn reached his hand in his pocket, pulled out a few bills, say it's thirty dollars.. “This is what I promised to you. This is yours and don't tell the Duke I gave it to you,” he whispered to her. “You can say this is what I pay to,” he handed her a twenty. He just dished fifty dollars. That was all lot. “That you tell the Duke I paid you. I know there is a percent of what you do that he takes,” he said going out to the hall. He nodded his head, “Your service was good, Ehperanza,” he announced to her if there where ears. “You are welcome.” he leaned in to her to whisper. “If you need help of anything you can visit me at my house that's near by the cemetery. Or you can stop at the Church, you can find me there.” He nodded his head, turned and walked down the stairs.

Playing a game of poker with some customers Duke, leaning on the table with his elbow, watched Shawn descend the stairs whee the brothel was located, smirking slightly when he saw the grin on the undertakers face.
"I'm all in and I call," he pushed his chips into the center of the table. to the moans of the other players. "Mr. Flanagan!" he called to him. "A moment sir! Ah, full house," he laid his cards down and scraped the mount of chips over to himself. "Cash these in for me, darlin'," he told one of his girls and left the table. "Give these gentleman a round on the house," he called out to the bartender and moved over to where he was. "I expect your experience with us has been pleasurable for you," he said to Shawn.

"Si, but..." Esperanza held out the money, but he was already retreating. He'd given her a small fortune, more than she would ever earn in a year. It was too much...
Sighing, she set aside five dollars for Duke then mulled over the rest. Finally she decided to keep half of the remainder and give the rest to the church, just to ease her soul. Taking a moment, she composed herself then headed downstairs, wondering if Tom would be in tonight. As she shook that thought off, she headed to the bar. She needed a drink.

As Shawn's leather boot landed on the wooden floor, he turned his head to see Duke waving him over as he was calling Shawn over. Shawn had wondered if Duke was one of the devil's sneaky demons in disguise. Shawn had to put his best profession mask on to fool Duke. The truth that Shawn had the urged to sneer at Duke. However there was the body guard who would come over and do serious damage to the undertaker.
“Oh, she was the best and excellent. I am very glad I came here to the Blackbird Saloon,” said Shawn hoping he could find a way avoid doing future business with the man. But Shawn would had to be sure Esperanza was fine but he had not want to see her again in this place. She deserved something better but Shawn felt she would not be the person for his son.
Shawn had tried to look calm as he could but he had tried to relax his shoulders so his long arms would have the appearance of calmness. Shawn had decided to see if the other man had anything to say. There was no way Shawn was going to speak before Duke said something. This was the time you the other person do the talking. It was away to keep out of trouble.

“Oh, she was the best and excellent. I am very glad I came here to the Blackbird Saloon,”
Duke grinned at him. "Yes, Essie is one of my best girls. You're welcome to come back anytime. Would you care to try your luck in a game of poker? Or perhaps a game of faro," he waved over to some available table across the room.

Shawn turned his head to study the gamble tables. It was game of chance but gambling was a devil's game. Shawn wasn't drunk. He had played a few games for fun with his family. He had spent a great amount of money.
“I save it for a rainy day,” he said to Duke. “Can't dig in rainy days. Dirt turns mud and very hard to shovel.” It was the worlds best excuse to get the hell out of Duke's establishment. As he was about to leave he saw the post of entertainment.
“I will come back for this,” he told Duke. “A good line up.” There was his hat on a table. He took it, placed it on, nodded his head and tapped it to Duke. “Thank you. I shall return,” he said. Or maybe he won't. Run for your life and never come back for the devil imp will nip your ass, he thought to himself.
He left the place and wished he never gone in. Because he was thinking about that young poor woman who said she was happy doing what she was doing. In a way, Shawn could not but it. He could be wrong and he had to learn to not to be so concern about other people. That's why his mother was with him in this city. She does that very well.

As she shook that thought off, she headed to the bar. She needed a drink. Doc saw Esperanza over by the bar standing alone. She had a sad , lonely look to her face.
"Might you allow a gentleman the pleasure of bringing a smile to your lovely face with a drink, Ms. Esperanza?" he asked her as he sidled up to the bar beside her. "Care for a bit of good sipping whiskey? It's smooth and a delight to the senses and it might be just the thing to lift your spirits."

"You mean the good stuff?" Esperanza smiled and nodded. "I could be persuaded." Reaching up, she straightened his collar, although it wasn't necessary. "I hope you aren't too much a gentleman?" She'd had her fill of that tonight!

Ordering a bottle of his brand he opened it and poured them both some in two glasses and handed her one with a smile.
"I hope you aren't too much a gentleman?"
Tapping his glass gently on hers he took a drink. "Why, my lady, whatever do you mean? I am always a gentleman, especially to a lady like you."
He set his glass back down on the bar and looked at her. "Something is bothering you. Tell me what's wrong. I am foremost your friend, my Lady Hope," he grinned. "Talk to me. It'll stay between us. I never betray my friends."

"Whoever said I was a lady?" Esperanza shot him a saucy look as she sipped from her glass.

Her tone was sensuous as she stepped closer to him, she pressed her hip to his. "I am only bothered by men who ask too many questions." Then she sighed and shrugged. "I am bothered by men who presume to understand me and by men who act surprised that I am not a saint, and want to save me from my wicked ways." Surprisingly, she realized that Tom did not fall into any of those categories.

Achoo had decided to go try to gamble and he was drunk. He gone in the nice high class place which he was not looking like he belonged there. Everyone was staring at him and sizing him up. He just smiled like an idiot. Honest. Achoo was not an idiot. The man was a stranger to the new world.
A few hands gone by, he lost all his money he had. “I can't be done,” he said slowly in his Chinese accent. “Let me try one more time. I pay you back.” He was trying to look innocent but it was not working. He was talking in Chinese too but no body did not seem to understand him.
Than the body guard, Magowan came over behind Achoo. Everyone stopped and looked over Achoo to see Magowan standing there. Without saying one word, Magowan grabbed Achoo by the shoulder and dragged him.
Leaving through the door, Magowan had Achoo outside. Everyone was watching this. This was a treat that Magowan was going to bust the little weird man to pieces.
Kicking his feet up, Achoo landed a kick at Magowan's face. The man was stunned but he grabbed the Chinese's man's leg, turned it and Achoo screamed in pain. That's when Achoo did a karate chop at Magowan. The big brute yelled in pain, dropping Achoo, who rolled away from the man.
“I do not need to be shown the way out,” Achoo told the Magowan who on his knees. “I leave you. Don't try---” that's when Magowan looked angry and pulling out his gun. That's when Achoo ran for his life and ran in an alley.
Magowan was deeply in pain and he was upset that he had not beaten the little man who beaten him instead. He walked back in the Black Bird Saloon shoving a few people aside. He was not happy but he went back to do his business.

"I am bothered by men who presume to understand me and by men who act surprised that I am not a saint, and want to save me from my wicked ways.""My dear Lady Hope," he looked at Esperanza closely. "do not presume you know me or presume how I perceive you or any woman. I am first and foremost your friend. I do not pay for the services of women. I also do not turn down the services of women," he shrugged and resumed looking at her. "On the contrary, I have the utmost respect for you."
He was interrupted by the disruption of the brute Magowan removing a small China man and watched as the little slant eyed fellow made good use of Magowan as a punching bag and returned to the poker tables.
"There are all kinds in this world, is there not?" he chuckled refilling their glasses.
