Name: Weldon Campbell
Play by: Brendan Gleeson
Age: 57
Date of Birth: 3rd April 1812
Occupation: Ranch owner, entrepreneur, railroad speculator
Fierce. Ambitious. Threatening. Intelligent. Brutal. Cold. Calculating.
A large, stout man, physically imposing by his large frame and the serious all too threatening demeanour he wears. He is verging on portly as he does treat himself well but despite his wealth and position he still helps on the ranch on occasion so as to be physically fit and strong. His body was once that of a prize boxer and a gritty cattle rustler before making his own way into buying and creating his own ranch.
Weldon’s career began in the gutters as a street fighter turned prize fighter. He made a name for himself in the streets of New York as a fierce pugilist but one fight resulted in the death of his opponent. Mired by this event he tried to restart his career in Boston where yet again another brutal fight resulted in the later death of his opponent. By this stage however Campbell had gotten in deep with organised crime, to pay gambling debts Campbell got involved in fixing boxing matches. The crime bosses were his saving grace getting Campbell off the hook on any charges but his match throwing was threatened to become public. So Campbell under pressure from the crime bosses got more actively involved in shady dealings as a man of leverage. He swiftly rose through the ranks of the organised crime gang but his ambitions were greater than to be merely a crime boss henchman.
In what would become his trademark brutality, Campbell beat his boss to a pulp and orchestrated the takeover of the business but also made swift changes to their organisation and business dealings so that he could present his takeover to the underlings and to the other crime bosses as the best move. Campbell proved to them that the previous crime boss had been fleecing them in order to line his own pocket. In this way, no retribution was sought against Campbell for his audacious move. Within his own organisation Campbell sought to ensure that he was respected as the leader and so greatly feared that no one would dare to cross him in the same way as he had his boss.
Weldon also sought to create a public image of himself as a respectable business man and soon became involved in railroad land speculation. He used his connects and ability to threaten, sabotage and undermine to undercut lands from owners and make a swift profit in turn. During this time, Weldon was introduced to Hollander Burgess whom Weldon would forge a lasting business relationship with, Hollander becoming his trusted right hand, bookkeeper and foreman. Weldon with Hollander’s guidance made contacts with various railroad business men and important government representatives who recognised his methods and who gladly courted Weldon in order to procure lands for the railroads, turning a blind eye to the profits Weldon made off of these dealings for himself.
Weldon came to Del Fuego in the guise of a railroad speculator and with the growing spectre of other organisations back in Boston opted to transfer his business dealings westward. He procured the Arkken Homsestead in his dealings and took over the ranch to run it himself as a front for his continued business dealings in land speculation and illegal trading.
The Campbell Ranch is a large homestead but not the largest by far. It employs many persons but most who work for Campbell soon learn to fear him and to toe his line.
