Ever since Mr. Anderson had left, Evangeline had thrown herself into her work to avoid feeling his loss. She had finally gained the courage to act on what she had been feeling for weeks, and he had left due to it. With him gone, they were short a ranch hand, and she had gone to taken on Mr Anderson's roll in breaking out the horses. She had been at it for days, with barely any sleep, just keeping herself busy.
They were making progress, but not as quickly as she had hoped. And even that had been slowed when she had been thrown from one of the horses she was breaking into the rails of the round pen. The air had been knocked out of her for a mere moment before she had forced herself to her feet and out of the way. She had been expecting to be sore the next day, and perhaps a bit bruised, but what she had not expected was waking up the next day barely able to move with her entire side black and blue.
She had let it go for a few days before a few of the maids had convinced her to seek out a doctor. So she had dressed, lacing herself into her dress very carefully, before climbing into a carriage and heading into town to seek out a doctor. It was a short ride, and when she arrived, she moved stiffly out of the carriage and out onto the dusty streets of Del Fuego.
The steps up to the doctor's front door were painful, made even more so by the corset and tight dress she wore. When she slipped inside, the waiting room was thankfully empty. She told the woman bustling around the waiting room of her troubles and requested for a doctor.
She was asked to sit and wait for the doctor. She nodded, sitting painfully in her seat and waiting, reminding herself to breathe softly and wait.

The day had been slow but Carl was grateful for it, the past week had been a busy one. He had dealt with two bullet injuries, three Apache attack victims involving arrowheads, and a very special case of blood clotting. When a soft knock came to the door of his small office and his nurse slipped her blonde head inside the open crack he nodded and told her he’d be right out.
Closing the books and stacking the papers to one side of his desk he adjusted his glasses before he walked into the waiting room, tall and confident to see his next patient as he rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt to his elbows. His bright blue eyes landed on the young small woman sitting in one of the chairs. The blonde nurse, Joan sat now behind the front desk looking over papers, her eyes wondering to Dr. Koening every now and then.
Carl had seen this woman about Del Fuego before, he knew of her father as well Mr. Redwood if memory served him right they owned a ranch just outside of town and were very well off in terms of wealth. Carl came to stand infront of the dark haired woman before he spoke “what can I help you with Ms. Redwood?” he asked keeping his hands inside the pockets of his trousers, a bright warm smile appearing on his sharp features.

Evangeline had just learned to sit comfortably in her seat when the doctor came from his office. She looked up from where she had been watching her hands in her lap, a sweet and soft face looking up to the doctor standing over her. She had never had to see the doctor in Del Fuego before. Most of her injuries were minor bumps and bruises that required no attention.
"Yes, Doctor. I was thrown from a horse a few days ago, and my maid believes I may have broken a rib or two." Her voice was calm and even, though it was quite apparent that she was indeed, in pain. She stood very carefully from her seat, inhaling hard as her sore ribs shifted uncomfortably inside the corset and tight dress. She cringed, waiting for the throbbing to subside..
Standing had brought her closer to the much taller man than she had expected and, with the chair against the back of her legs, she had no where to go. So she craned her head up to look at him, big doe eyes gazing at his blue. "If you could just take a look at me and send me on my way, I'd be much obliged to ya." She asked with a sweet smile.
Even craning her neck up hurt, pulling all the way down her side. But, always the proper lady, she didn't show it, trying to appear tough as an oak so he wouldn't insist on keeping her any longer than necessary.

Carl did not shift nor stir from where he stood when Ms. Redwood stood from the chair. He watched her as she stood taking not of her slow movements, she was in pain and when she mentioned a horse and maybe some broken ribs Carl’s mind went to the worst. The grin turned into a just as warm smile before he placed a hand to the small of her back against the purple silk of her dress. “Well I will do the best I can Ms.
Redwood, step into this room here and Nurse Walters will help you out of that dress and into a more comfortable attire” he let his hand fall from her back as they neared the smaller room. The blond nurse came up beside Evangeline “come on inside miss I’ll help you out of that dress” she gingerly walked her inside and shut the door. Carl went back into his office, grabbing his patient record book, pen and doctor’s jacket of white he returned to the room about ten minutes later. Nurse Walters had helped Ms. Redwood into a plain thin white cotton dress with short sleeves and an open back with tie string. It made the examination and check up process much easier and more comfortable for men and women.
It wasn’t done for all patients but only the ones that required Carl to check certain areas of the body where a corset and thick fabric would help. Entering the smaller check up room nurse Walters slipped past Carl before shutting the door gently. “Now, you believed your ribs may have been fractured or broken from falling from this horse?” he questioned motioned with a hand for her to sit upon the wooden cloth covered table. As he awaited her answer he opened the book in his hands and started a new page for Ms. Redwood, his blue eyes flickered from the page to the young southern woman “I’ll need to hand you lay down for me Ms. Redwood, please” he asked his voice calm and smooth.

Evangeline nodded to the doctor, the hand gently pushing against her back painful, but she bit her tongue and endured, until she was lead into a small side room by the nurse. The woman moved behind her, unlacing the back of her dress and then her corset, a motion that caused Evangeline a brief moment of pain and then an unimaginable relief. Once the thick boned cloth was off, she felt a measurable amount better, but her side was still throbbing unhappily.
She looked skeptically at the thin white dress she was to put on. Back home, the young woman had had the same doctor since she was a baby. Dr. Morgan, an elderly man with keen eyes and deft hands had always been the one to take care of her. This new, and handsome, doctor was an enigma to her. And the newness of it all made her very reluctant to slip into the think piece of cloth that would render her desperately close to naked. But she did so, after a moment of unsure nervousness. The nurse helped her tie it in the back, and neatly folded her dress and underpinnings, placing them on a table in the other end of the room.
Evangeline herself had just moved to sit down and relieve the throbbing in her side a bit when the Doctor entered. She climbed back to her feet, clearing her throat and watching the man move across the room with a nearly skeptical eye. "Yes." She replied in a soft, drawling voice to his question. "We recently lost a ranch hand so I've been havin' to help break out the new stock. One threw me into the railin' of our round pen." She explained.
She moved towards the wooden table, hopping up onto it with a little difficulty due to her short size and her sore ribs. She then pulled her legs up onto the table as well and rotated to lay back as the doctor requested. The motion caused her side to pull and she inhaled hard with pain, shifting to try to get a bit more comfortable..
